Challenge

New technologies and models are rapidly transforming the workforce and education ecosystem. While these innovations can create new opportunities, they also risk reinforcing systemic inequities. Learners who face barriers to accessing new technologies may not gain the understanding and skill-development needed to succeed in future careers.

Procedure

Immersive technology places learners in control of their learning, in situations they may not experience in a traditional classroom. In 2021, Skill Immersion Lab was established with SAP and Jobs for the Future (JFF) to strengthen uniquely human skills through virtual reality (VR) training for learners ages 16-24. The program utilizes VR headsets and immersive learning modules to train learners on uniquely human skills like communication, problem-solving, and leadership. Through Skill Immersion Lab, learners co-create VR learning modules based on characters, environments, and stories that feel authentic and familiar

Results

To date, 875 learners at 14 sites across 8 states have participated in the program. JFF’s Skill Immersion Lab team conducted deep listening sessions and qualitative interviews with learners and educators to understand program experiences. Through our new portal, we invite you to listen as learners and educators reflect on the personal and professional growth they experienced through Skill Immersion Lab.
