JFF’s Michael Collins in “The Need for More Black Workers in Tech”

The technology industry is rapidly expanding in both influence and scale, but Black Americans are notably underrepresented.

According to the Brookings Institution, Black workers in 2018 accounted for nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. workforce but only 8 percent of tech workers.

In an effort to uncover opportunities that can strengthen pathways to economic advancement for Black learners and workers in the digital economy, JFF released Purpose-Built to Advance Equity: Expanding Opportunities in Tech for Black Americans, with support from Comcast NBCUniversal. The report explores high-impact models in the tech sector and provides recommendations for funders, educators, employers, and policymakers.

As part of its release, JFF Vice President Michael Collins was quoted in an article by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) on successful strategies for increasing Black talent representation in the tech sector.

We wanted to identify models with the potential to break through and help to eliminate these pernicious racial equity gaps in the technology sector.
