“Why I Apprentice” Frequently Asked Questions

Who can enter?
Any youth who is currently participating in a Registered Apprenticeship program in the United States, or who has completed one in the past 12 months, and who is between the ages of 16 and 21 at the time of submission is eligible to enter.
How do I submit?
For your video to be entered into the competition, you must:
- Fill out and submit the official entry form; and
- Upload the final mp4 video file and all signed media releases for all participants are submitted to this Dropbox link (files must be titled with the lead producer’s first and last name [ex. mp4: edsheeran.mp4 / ex. form: edsheeran-mediarelease-johnlennon.pdf]).
When is the submission deadline?
Submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. ET on Friday, April 10, 2020. (Note: This deadline has been extended from the original submission deadline of Tuesday, March 31.)
What could I win?
The lead producer of the winning video will receive $1,000 and will have the opportunity to travel to JFF’s Horizons summit with a friend or family member on June 10 in New Orleans.
The lead producer of the second-place video will receive $500, and the lead producer of the third-place video will receive $250.
When will winners be announced?
Winners will be notified in mid-May and will be publicly announced and receive their prizes on June 10.
How are the videos judged?
The top 15 videos will be chosen using the judging rubric. From those 15, our panel of judges will choose the winners based on the rubric. In the event of a tie, our youth judges will make the final decision.
How do I know if I am in a Registered Apprenticeship?
A Registered Apprenticeship is an apprenticeship program that is registered with the federal Office of Apprenticeship or a state’s own State Apprenticeship Agency. If you’re not sure, ask your employer!
What if multiple youth apprentices worked on my video?
There is no limit to the number of youth apprentices who can work on a video. However, the video must be entered under the name of only one person (the Lead Producer), who will serve as the main point of contact and will be recognized as the prize recipient. Co-producers listed on the entry form will be credited for any external use of the video.
Can multiple youth apprentices from the same program submit videos?
Yes! However, each youth apprentice can only be the Lead Producer on one video.
Can I receive help on my video?
You may collaborate with other youth apprentices on your content and video. However, no professional assistance is allowed. Adults may assist with production but are limited to verbal guidance only. Adults may act in your video or operate cameras, but they may not contribute to the content.
What forms do I need to fill out, and where should I send them?
When you upload your video to the Dropbox link, include a signed Media Release Form for each person who appears in your video. Then, fill out the online Entry Form. If your video is chosen as a top three finalist, you will need to submit a W9 to receive the prize winnings. Finalist videos cannot be awarded a prize unless we receive the necessary forms.
Can I use copyrighted materials?
You cannot use copyrighted materials (music, images, etc.) may be used for this contest unless you own the copyright or have a license to use the material. You must obtain written permission for all copyrighted materials and provide it to us upon request. You may write your own music or use “stock” music that is included in some editing software. If you choose to write your own music, make sure the composer signs the Media Release Form.
Can entries be disqualified?
Yes. We will disqualify your entry if you do not submit the appropriate forms or if your video contains inappropriate content, uses copyrighted materials, or is longer than 60 seconds (including credits). If you are unsure whether an item is copyrighted or inappropriate, run it by a teacher or supervisor. If you still have questions, just don’t use it. Better safe than sorry!
